Does Perplexity accept a product feed?
Yes, through one door only. Perplexity accepts a product feed inside its Merchant Program: you apply, pass a business verification, then deliver your data as CSV or XML over the API, an SFTP link, or a dedicated S3 bucket. It is free, with Perplexity stating “This program is free for merchants” (Perplexity, November 18, 2024), and no other channel for sending it a catalog is documented anywhere.
Availability as of July 23, 2026. Everything transactional in Perplexity is US-scoped: Instant Buy targets US residents aged 18 and over, and Store Sync covers the US and UK today, with Germany announced (PayPal, July 23, 2026). Outside the US you can be cited and linked, not sell inside Perplexity.
For scale: Perplexity announced “more than 150 million questions each week” in November 2025, its latest official figure, eight months old. Adobe measures AI traffic to US retail up 138% year over year in May 2026, converting 54% better (via Digital Commerce 360, June 17, 2026).
Crawl or feed: what actually changes
This is the question that decides your roadmap, and most guides skip it.
| Crawl only (PerplexityBot) | Merchant Program feed | Feed + Instant Buy (PayPal) |
|---|---|---|
| What it takes: do not block PerplexityBot. Nothing to sign. | What it takes: apply, get verified, deliver CSV or XML over API, SFTP or S3. | What it takes: Perplexity marking your products Instant Buy. |
| What it unlocks: being cited, summarized and linked in an answer. | What it unlocks: entering the product index, with richer details. | What it unlocks: buying without leaving Perplexity, via PayPal or Venmo. |
| What it does not do: no buy badge, no product index entry. | What it does not do: no guarantee of being surfaced. | What it does not do: nothing outside the US. |
| Cost: none. | Cost: none on the Perplexity side. | Cost: your existing PayPal fees still apply. |
The first tier is underrated. Perplexity describes PerplexityBot as the agent used to “surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity”, and Perplexity-User as the visit triggered by a user question, both declared not used for training (Perplexity Docs, July 23, 2026). A crawlable catalog is citable, no feed required.
What the feed adds, in Perplexity’s words: “increased chances of being a recommended product because the products will be in our index, and when we have more robust details, we can better determine if a product is high quality and relevant to a user’s query”. Increased odds, not a reserved slot. What crawling never does is produce a buy badge: “Products must be marked Instant Buy and are available from select merchants” (Perplexity Help Center, July 23, 2026).
The Perplexity Merchant Program in July 2026
Launched on November 18, 2024, the program is still live, with its “Start selling with us” button. Three sources agree it is free: the launch post, an April 2025 press statement describing no commission and no membership fee “at this time” (Digital Commerce 360, April 1, 2025), and the Merchant Program Terms of May 28, 2025, silent on any Perplexity-side fee.
Entry is two steps: the form on perplexity.ai/merchants, then a technical access request by email to [email protected] (§2.1). A business verification on legal name, address and tax information follows, possibly via a third party (§3.1).
Two clauses matter. Perplexity controls what gets surfaced, “Perplexity has sole discretion to determine whether to surface any Merchant Products” (§2.2), so being accepted is not being shown. And placement is not for sale: its cards are unsponsored, “These cards aren’t sponsored, they’re unbiased recommendations”, which Shopify confirms.
Then there is size. The launch post targeted “large retailers”, after which Firmly.ai in April 2025 and PayPal in November 2025 opened paths for merchants of every size. No numeric threshold has ever been published: not catalog volume, not revenue, not review time. If a guide gives you one, it invented it.
Feed format: what is actually required
This is where guides go off the rails most often.
What the contract requires. “All Product Data must be delivered as CSV or XML files in one of the formats specified by Perplexity” (§2.1). Three delivery channels exist: the API, an SFTP link, or CSV files in a dedicated S3 bucket.
The only official list of expected data is the contractual “Product Data” definition, in business language rather than field names: title, price, description, brand, model, weight, stock status and availability, country of origin, shipping time, shipping options and origin, dimensions, images, warranties, return and exchange policies, regulatory warnings such as California’s Proposition 65, certificates of compliance.
The clause nobody quotes. The same paragraph requires data “at least the same level of quality and comprehensiveness” as your other channels, so a feed thinner than your Google feed is a contractual failure. Price parity is contractual too: the price must be “accurate, not misleading, and represents a price offered by Merchant through its own website or other sales channels for the same or a substantially equivalent product” (§3.3).
What does not exist. No technical feed specification is published: the developer documentation covers the API only. Any article listing field names as Perplexity requirements is extrapolating from Google Merchant Center. The closest anchor is PayPal, whose Store Sync FAQ states “Google Shopping CSV or similar structured formats work well. PayPal also accepts catalog feeds via API or SFTP.” Reusing your Google feed is a PayPal-documented best practice, not a Perplexity requirement.
Shopify: the three real paths to Perplexity
Start with what does not exist: no Perplexity app in the Shopify App Store, no Perplexity sales channel in the admin.
Path 1, crawling, already on. Shopify renders HTML server-side and its default robots.txt blocks no AI crawler, so PerplexityBot reads your pages with zero setup. That foundation decides what Perplexity can cite: price and availability in the HTML, verifiable facts, reachable policy pages. See optimizing a Shopify store for GEO and robots.txt and AI crawlers.
Path 2, Shopify Catalog, with no control surface. Shopify writes in Editions Winter ‘26: “Your products are discoverable right in ChatGPT, Copilot, and Perplexity, with other channels coming soon.” But its Help Center, under agentic sales channels, lists only ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta. Interpretation, not established fact: Perplexity appears to be fed by syndication through Catalog, with no control surface in the admin.
Path 3, the Merchant Program directly. Unlike ChatGPT, where Catalog discovery is automatic for eligible stores, Shopify states plainly: “Perplexity requires joining its Merchant Program” (Shopify, April 2, 2026). Before promising anything to your ops team, note that orders do not land in the Shopify admin: “Checkout is handled through PayPal’s Instant Buy, not through Shopify’s checkout, so those orders are managed through PayPal rather than your Shopify admin.”
Maintaining the feed: freshness, price, stock
Maintenance is governed by qualitative obligations, not a calendar.
No refresh frequency is published. The requirement is that data stay accurate and complete at all times. The cadences in circulation, such as every four to six hours, come from no Perplexity document: writing them into a spec commits you to a constraint that does not exist.
The defensible cadence comes from elsewhere. Since the contract requires quality at least equal to your other channels, align Perplexity on your Google Shopping cadence. Best practice, not requirement.
Three fields expose you most: price, under an explicit parity clause, stock status, part of the Product Data definition, and shipping time, which carries the promise shown in the answer. The real risk is not freshness anyway, it is divergence between the product page, the Google feed and the Perplexity feed.
Perplexity optimization checklist
Every line carries its status, which is exactly what existing guides leave out.
- Allow PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User in robots.txt. Best practice: both are documented, neither is mandated.
- Serve price and availability in server-rendered HTML, and make sure shipping, returns and warranty pages return 200. Best practice.
- Apply on perplexity.ai/merchants, then request technical access by email. Official requirement, only documented channel (§2.1).
- Prepare the business verification: legal name, address, tax information. Official requirement (§3.1).
- Deliver data as CSV or XML, over API, SFTP or S3. Official requirement (§2.1).
- Cover every Product Data category, including country of origin, dimensions, warranties, regulatory warnings. Official requirement.
- Do not ship a feed thinner than your other channels. Official requirement (§2.1).
- Match the feed price to your other sales channels. Official requirement (§3.3).
- Keep data accurate and complete at all times. Official requirement, no stated frequency.
- Start from your Google Shopping feed. Best practice, per PayPal’s Store Sync FAQ.
- Keep product page and feed consistent on price, stock, lead time. Best practice.
- Do not promise an Instant Buy badge internally: Perplexity marks the products, not you. Best practice.
Instant Buy: who can sell inside Perplexity
Mind the vocabulary, since many articles are stuck in 2024. “Buy with Pro” was the first version, for Pro subscribers only. Since November 25, 2025 the checkout is Instant Buy, and the shopping experience is “available for free to all US Perplexity users”.
- PayPal is the operator, paid by PayPal or Venmo (PayPal Newsroom, November 2025).
- The merchant stays merchant of record: customer relationship, returns, post-purchase.
- Zero fee applies to Perplexity only. PayPal: “Your existing PayPal transaction fees apply. There are no additional Store Sync fees, but we reserve the right to introduce fees with advance notice, and may pass through fees charged by AI platforms.” No platform commission, but not free.
- The scope is US, for adult residents, Store Sync covering the US and UK today.
- Named merchants: Wayfair, Abercrombie & Fitch, Ashley Furniture, Fabletics, Adorama, Newegg.
One note for Shopify merchants: Shopify is not named among Instant Buy platforms. The Perplexity Help Center cites BigCommerce, Shopware and Wix, and PayPal’s Store Sync partners are Wix, Cymbio, Commerce (BigCommerce and Feedonomics) and Shopware. Not an announced exclusion, an absence of mention, and the difference is worth holding.
What Perplexity does not document
Most content on this topic fills these gaps with invention presented as fact.
- No technical feed specification. Any guide listing field names as “required by Perplexity” is extrapolating from Google Merchant Center.
- No published refresh frequency. The numeric intervals in circulation are invented.
- No published product selection rules. The role of GTIN, reviews or AggregateRating in ranking is documented nowhere. Shopify: “Perplexity hasn’t published a detailed ranking algorithm”.
- No official crawl versus feed comparison. The table above is a reconstruction.
- No coverage or GMV figures. Adobe aggregates “AI sources” without splitting by engine.
- The Shopify ambiguity is unresolved. Editions Winter ‘26 names Perplexity as a destination, the Help Center does not list it as a manageable channel.
- The freshness of the official pages is questionable. The merchant page still shows ”© Copyright 2025” and the Terms have not moved since May 28, 2025. Nothing signals abandonment, nothing confirms a recent update.
The practical conclusion: the only thing you fully control is the quality of what crawling finds on your store. The feed raises your odds without guaranteeing them, and checkout depends on a decision that is not yours. Start with the foundation, which also serves ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Claude.
