## The short version

US shoppers have seen Google AI Overviews since May 2024. Two years of public data now show a clear pattern: overviews answer questions and comparisons, cite about eight sources, and take a large share of the clicks on the searches where they appear. In 2026, Google added ads inside them and a shopping cart that follows the shopper across Search and Gemini. Here is what that changes for a Shopify store selling in the US.

> **US status as of September 17, 2026.** Google began rolling out AI Overviews to everyone in the US on May 14, 2024 ([Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/generative-ai-google-search-may-2024/)). AI Mode passed one billion monthly users one year after its debut, according to Google at I/O on May 19, 2026 ([Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/search-io-2026/)). Unlike in newer markets, the studies below were run on **US** queries, so their numbers apply directly to US shoppers.

## Finding 1: overviews answer questions, not keywords

The most recent large dataset is an academic study published on May 13, 2026 ([Xu, Iqbal and Montgomery, arXiv](https://arxiv.org/abs/2605.14021)). The authors tracked 55,393 US trending queries across 19 categories over 40 days (March 13 to April 21, 2026).

| Search type | Share with an AI Overview |
|---|---|
| All queries | 13.7% |
| Question queries | 64.7% |
| Non-question queries, 1 word | 9.9% |
| Non-question queries, 5 words | 18.5% |
| Non-question queries, 6+ words | 38.7% |

*Source: arXiv 2605.14021, US queries, March to April 2026.*

Pew Research reached the same conclusion from real browsing behavior: among 68,879 Google searches made by 900 US adults in March 2025, question searches produced a summary 60% of the time and searches of ten words or more 53% of the time ([Pew Research Center, July 22, 2025](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/)).

In practice, "trail running shoes" is unlikely to trigger an overview. "Which trail running shoes work for wide feet on rocky terrain" is far more likely to. Your product page needs the facts that answer the second one.

## Finding 2: comparison searches are where overviews grow

Direct purchase searches still rarely trigger an overview. Ahrefs measured in September 2025 ([Ahrefs, November 10, 2025](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-triggers/)):

| Search intent | Share with an AI Overview |
|---|---|
| Informational | 21.4% |
| Commercial (comparison, reviews, "best") | 4.3% |
| Transactional ("buy", "price") | 2.1% |
| Shopping queries | 3.2% |

*Source: Ahrefs, 146 million desktop results, September 2025.*

The trend since then is clear. Across more than 600,000 keywords in its US desktop database, Semrush found that between November 2025 and April 2026 ([Semrush, July 2, 2026](https://www.semrush.com/blog/ai-overviews-commercial-search-study/)):

- the share of **commercial** results with an overview grew **71%**;
- the share of **transactional** results with an overview fell **5%**;
- commercial growth reached **108%** in computers and electronics, **77%** in games and **231%** in finance.

The overview steps in while the shopper compares products and criteria, before they pick a store. That is where your product is kept or dropped.

## Finding 3: when an overview appears, clicks drop

Two independent US measurements point the same way.

| Measurement | With an overview | Without |
|---|---|---|
| Visits with a click on a traditional result (Pew, March 2025) | 8% | 15% |
| Visits with a click on a link inside the summary (Pew) | 1% | n/a |
| Visits that ended the browsing session (Pew) | 26% | 16% |

*Source: Pew Research Center, 900 US adults, March 2025.*

Ahrefs compared the desktop click-through rate of top-ranking pages on 300,000 informational keywords. On keywords with an AI Overview, it found a **58% lower** click-through rate in December 2025, up from 34.5% in its March 2025 measurement ([Ahrefs, February 4, 2026](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overviews-reduce-clicks-update/)).

Two caveats matter for a store. Both studies focus on informational searches, where overviews are most common. And the loss is per search: a store can lose clicks on how-to and comparison queries while its brand and product searches stay stable. Our [AI traffic funnel study](/en/blog/ai-traffic-funnel-crawl-vs-click/) shows why the gap is also hard to see in analytics.

## Finding 4: your product page is one source among eight

The arXiv study analyzed 7,583 overviews. Three numbers matter for a store:

1. **A median of 8 sources per overview** (range 1 to 32). When your page is cited, it shares the answer with third-party reviews, publishers, videos and comparison sites.
2. **Nearly 30% of cited domains do not appear on the first page** of regular results. Ranking well is not enough, and not ranking does not rule out being cited.
3. **11% of claims are not supported by the cited page**, mostly through omission. An overview can attribute a feature to your product that your page does not state.

Pew adds that Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit are the most frequently cited sources in both summaries and regular results. For a Shopify brand, that means demo videos and real customer discussions weigh alongside your own page.

## What changed in 2026: ads inside, and a cart that follows the shopper

Two changes make AI Overviews more commercial for US merchants.

**Ads inside the overview.** Google Ads documentation states that text and Shopping ads from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible to show within AI Overviews, in English on mobile and desktop, in the US and eleven other countries ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16297775?hl=en)). Semrush found that ads and overviews now appear together about twice as often as a year earlier. Your organic product facts and your Merchant Center feed now compete in the same box.

**Universal Cart.** Announced at I/O on May 19, 2026, Universal Cart lets a shopper add products from Search and the Gemini app to one cart that tracks price drops, price history and restocks, then check out with Google Pay or move to the merchant's site. Google said it would roll out in the US this summer, with Shopify merchants Fenty and Steve Madden among the launch partners, and that it relies on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) ([Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/shopping/google-shopping-cart/)). How your catalog reaches these surfaces is covered in our guide to [Google AI Mode shopping for Shopify](/en/blog/google-ai-mode-shopping-shopify/).

The consequence: an overview is no longer only an answer. It can end with an ad or an add-to-cart that never lands on your product page. Accurate price, stock and reviews in your feed become the facts Google repeats on your behalf.

## What Google asks for, and what it does not

Google is explicit: there are **no additional requirements** to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no files or markup to create ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)). The basics remain:

- indexable, accessible pages;
- helpful, people-first content;
- up-to-date information, including **Merchant Center** for stores;
- tracking in **Search Console**, where AI feature traffic is counted under the "Web" search type.

The technical detail (JavaScript, structured data, llms.txt) is covered in our [Google AI 2026 guide for Shopify](/en/blog/google-ai-optimization-guide-2026/).

## Five actions for a US Shopify product page

1. **Answer comparison questions on the page.** Who the product is for, who it is not for, which criteria set it apart, how it differs from the neighboring model. A short, factual product FAQ beats a marketing description. See our guide to [optimizing a Shopify product page for AI](/en/kb/optimize-shopify-product-page-ai/).
2. **Align price, stock and reviews across the page, structured data and Merchant Center.** These are the facts an overview, a Shopping ad and Universal Cart all reuse. Shopify's Google & YouTube channel syncs the catalog, but not inconsistencies introduced by a theme or an app.
3. **Make reviews and shipping times readable without JavaScript.** Google renders JavaScript, but many other AI engines do not, and [reviews loaded by widgets stay invisible](/en/blog/customer-reviews-invisible-ai-engines/) to them.
4. **Exist beyond your own site.** With eight sources per answer and YouTube and Reddit among the most cited, demo videos, third-party reviews and real community discussions count. They should state the same facts as your page.
5. **Measure Google on its own.** Track the "Web" search type in Search Console, watch click-through rates on comparison queries, and regularly check what the overview says about your products. With 11% of claims unsupported by the cited page, a mistake about your product is a real risk; our article on [brand confusion in AI Overviews](/en/blog/ai-overview-brand-entity-confusion-geo/) details a test protocol.

## Limits of this data

- **Informational focus.** The Pew and Ahrefs click studies mostly cover informational searches. Click loss on product and brand searches is not measured at the same scale.
- **Dates.** Pew data dates from March 2025 and the Ahrefs trigger study from September 2025, before the 2026 changes. The March to April 2026 arXiv study confirms their orders of magnitude, not their exact percentages.
- **Desktop.** The Ahrefs and Semrush figures come from desktop data; mobile behavior may differ.
- **Small samples per category.** The arXiv study includes 158 shopping queries (14.6% with an overview), too few to derive a reliable ecommerce rate.
- **Rollouts.** Universal Cart and ads inside overviews roll out progressively; check what your own shoppers see before planning around them.

## Check what Google and AI assistants read on your product pages

Verity Score is a Shopify app built for this. It checks what Google, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can read on every product page and flags gaps between the page, structured data and Merchant Center. It writes the articles and fixes you approve to your store, with a 30-day undo. It tracks your strategic prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, and measures AI traffic through to add-to-cart and order. ## FAQ

### Since when are Google AI Overviews available in the US?

Google started rolling out AI Overviews to everyone in the US in May 2024, announced at Google I/O 2024. AI Mode followed in 2025 and passed one billion monthly users worldwide by May 2026, according to Google. An overview only appears on searches where Google considers a generated answer useful.

### How often do AI Overviews appear on US searches?

In a study of 55,393 US trending queries tracked from March 13 to April 21, 2026, 13.7% of queries triggered an AI Overview, and 64.7% of question queries did (Xu, Iqbal and Montgomery, arXiv, May 13, 2026). Pew Research found a summary on 18% of the 68,879 Google searches made by 900 US adults in March 2025.

### Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to my store?

On the searches where they appear, yes. Pew Research measured a click on a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without, and a click on a link inside the summary in 1% of visits (March 2025). Ahrefs measured a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page on informational keywords with an overview (December 2025 data, published February 4, 2026).

### Can Shopping ads appear inside AI Overviews in the US?

Yes. Google Ads documentation states that text and Shopping ads from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible to show within AI Overviews, in English on mobile and desktop, in the US and several other countries. Semrush found that Google Ads and AI Overviews appear together about twice as often as a year earlier.

### Do I need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no new files or markup to create. The basics remain indexing, helpful content and up-to-date information, including Merchant Center for stores. Traffic from these features is reported in Search Console under the Web search type.
