Eyewear is the category where AI routes through fit numbers first, so machine-readable measurements are the biggest lever. A measurement that lives only inside a JPEG is invisible to most AI crawlers.

### How should an eyewear store talk about UV protection for sunglasses?

State the real spec. Say whether the lens blocks UV up to 400 nanometres (UV400, full UVA and UVB) and give the ISO 12312-1 filter category (0 to 4, which sets how much visible light passes). In the EU, sunglasses are Category I personal protective equipment under Regulation 2016/425 and carry a CE mark; in the US they are an FDA Class I device under 21 CFR 886.5850. Saying 'UV protection' with no number is the kind of vague claim AI skips. Note category 4 lenses are not legal for driving.

### Are blue-light blocking glasses a citation risk?

They are a claims risk if you oversell them. The strongest evidence, a 2023 Cochrane review of 17 trials, found blue-light filtering lenses may not reduce eye strain in the short term, and a November 2025 meta-analysis found non-significant effects on sleep. The American Academy of Ophthalmology does not recommend them. In 2017 the UK regulator fined Boots Opticians 40,000 pounds over a 'protects your retina from harmful blue light' claim the ASA ruled misleading. Describe the optical feature honestly (filters a portion of blue light, a comfort preference) and never claim eye-health protection or guaranteed better sleep.

### Which AI crawlers should a Shopify eyewear store allow in robots.txt?

Allow OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot and Googlebot at minimum. GPTBot and Google-Extended are training-only controls and do not affect whether you appear in AI search answers, so blocking them does not remove you from ChatGPT search or Google AI surfaces.

### How do prescription glasses sold online get found by AI?

By declaring the prescription parameters and lens options in machine-readable text. State which Rx ranges you support (sphere, cylinder, axis, add), that you need pupillary distance, and the lens choices: single vision, bifocal or progressive, the index options (1.50, 1.59 polycarbonate, 1.61, 1.67, 1.74) and coatings (anti-reflective, photochromic, polarised). In the US the FTC Eyeglass Rule requires prescribers to release the prescription, which is what lets shoppers buy online. AI assistants recommend the store that makes its Rx and lens capabilities explicit over the one that hides them behind a configurator.
